“Saapa Rasmi” (ശാപരശ്മി), “Swarga Kshethram” (സ്വര്ഗ്ഗക്ഷേത്രം), “Saparya” (സപര്യ), “Seethaa Chakram” (സീതാചക്രം), and “Fr. Damien” (ഫാദര് ഡാമിയന്) were the major dramas successfully staged by Kalasadan in the initial years. The names of famous drama artists and directors such as C.L. Jose, Joseph Chettupuzha, T.G. Ravi, Jose Pellissery, C.I. Paul, Jose Payammal, Kalalayam Radha, Thrissur Elsy, Philomina, Fr. Giles Chettupuzhakaran, and Fr. Francis Karippery
need special mention.A drama named, “Alakal Urangunnilla”, was organized and first staged as part of the 12th Anniversary celebration of Kalasadan in Kerala Sahitya Academy Hall during 1984. Varghese Paul Koratty (Drama Script Writer), K.M. Dharman Palluruthy (Director), M.K. Arjunanan (Music Director), A.P. Gopalan (Lyricist), Artist Sujathan (Stage Artist), were some of the major contributors to this drama. This was staged in about 100 places in Kerala. Sri. C.R. Kesavan Vaidyar (Chandrika) inaugurated the State Level Art Competitions organized in connection with the 12th Anniversary of Kalasadan. Sri. P. Thomas, the Anglo-Indian Writer presided. About 500 people participated in the competitions held in Light Music, Speech and One Act Pay.
The 12th Annual Day Programme was inaugurated by Sri. P. Ramachandran, the Governor of Kerala on 10th August 1984 at Town Hall, Thrissur.The Symposium on Drama was inaugurated by Monsignor Paul Chittilappilly in a function presided by Prof. G. Sankarapillai. Dr. Chummar Choondal presented paper on the topic “Contribution of Drama in Cultural Renaissance”. C. L. Jose was the moderator.Kalasadan organized a Workshop on Drama on 12th October 2002 especially for youth.
World Drama Day Celebrations and C.J. Thomas Commemoration Speech
Kalasadan had also organized World Drama Day on 27th March 2010 with various programmes at Kerala Sahitya Academy. John Paul, the famous cinema activist was the chief guest. He presented a speech on the topic “C. J. Thomas and World Drama Scenario”.
Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath released the CD prepared by Kalasadan containing the songs of the drama, “Aa manushyan nee thanne” (You are that man), the well-known drama of C. J. Thomas. Beena Emson, the daughter of C. J. Thomas received the CD. Purushan Kadalundi, Secretary, Kerala Sahitya Academy, Dr. C. K. Thomas, Director, Doordharshan Kendra, Thrissur, etc. spoke.
“Aa manushyan nee thanne” (You are that man), the Dance-Music Mega Drama
In 2010 May, Dr. C.K. Thomas, President, Kalasadan designed and directed the Dance-Music Mega Drama, “Aa manushyan nee thanne” (You are that man), of C. J. Thomas. More than 200 actors were there to stage the show. The drama helped to disseminate the message of life of King David. The drama was staged in a 25000 square feet air conditioned theater having seven parallel stages. Media, including Doordharshan, Jeevan TV, TCV, ACV, etc. partially telecast the programme. Thiruvananthapuram Doordharshan telecast the entire drama in four days. The programme ran to packed audiences for 10 days. The same drama, “Aa manushyan nee thanne” was staged for 11 days during May 2011 in Thrissur in collaboration with Sri. P. Babu, Thrissur, United Entertainments, Paravattani.
